Reshaping Metal Fabrication: The Technological Evolution and Intelligent Future of Cut-to-Length (CTL) Lines

Introduction

In the realm of modern metal processing, the Cut-to-Length (CTL) line stands as a core asset, redefining manufacturing workflows with superior efficiency and precision. This article delves into the technical specifications and innovations that empower these intelligent production systems.

1. Core Process Principles: The Automated Loop from Coil to Finished Sheet

A high-performance line integrates three critical stages:

· Decoiling: Hydraulic-driven units with electric dual-supports handle coils up to 30 tons, ensuring precise adaptation to various coil diameters.

· Leveling: Utilizing a 9-roll continuous correction system with R=75mm Work Rolls, the line achieves progressive plastic deformation. It maintains flatness within ±0.3mm/m² for materials ranging from 0.3 to 4mm thick.

· Cross-Cutting: Equipped with a servo-driven flying drum shear and 0.01mm resolution grating scales, the system guarantees dimensional deviations under ±0.15mm at 4000mm cutting lengths. A dual-station stacking device enables continuous collection at 60 pieces per minute.

2. Five Innovations Defining the Industry

· Material Savings: Intelligent nesting systems boost utilization by 28%, eliminating the traditional 8% scrap bottleneck.

· Energy Efficiency: Permanent magnet synchronous motors reduce energy consumption by 40%, achieving a rate of 5.2 kW•h per ton.

· Agile Changeover: Setup time is slashed to 15 minutes, with changeover speeds 73% faster than conventional equipment.

· Expanded Capability: The latest roller systems process 12mm high-strength steel with tensile strength from 340 to 980 MPa.

· Eco-Friendly Operation: Fully enclosed oil mist recovery systems keep workshop PM2.5 levels at a pristine 0.08 mg/m³.

3. Applications: From Consumer Goods to Heavy Industry

These lines are vital in white goods manufacturing (flow guides, compressor brackets), electrical cabinets, packaging, and smart home decor. In the EV sector, they ensure the precision required for battery tray steel plates. Industry data from 2023 indicates a 32% increase in production efficiency and a drop in defect rates to 0.32% for adopters.

4. Procurement and Maintenance Strategy

· Key Parameters: Line speed matching (up to 90m/min), blade material compatibility (Cr12MoV/DC53, HRC58-62), and control systems (MODBUS-TCP protocol support).

· Lifecycle Care: Weekly hydraulic checks (14-16 MPa), quarterly lubrication changes, and annual roller alignment (<0.02mm). Remote diagnostics monitor 173 parameters with 92% fault prediction accuracy.

5. Future Outlook: The Industry 4.0 Evolution

The integration of Digital Twins and Edge Computing is driving the "Four Transformations": self-optimizing process parameters, intelligent tool life prediction, AR-assisted HMI, and waste heat recovery. This evolution marks the transition from mere machinery to a smart, interconnected factory node.

Drum Shear (Rotary Shear)

Jiade Drum Shear (also known as a Rotary Shear or Flying Drum Shear) is a continuous cutting device used in metal coil cold rolling lines. The upper and lower blades are fixed to a pair of synchronously rotating cylindrical drums. As the drums rotate, the blades engage to cut moving strip steel, wire, or rod without stopping the production line.

⚙ Working Principle

· Synchronous Rotation: Two parallel drums are driven by motors via gears, rotating at a constant circumferential speed.

· Blade Engagement: When the blades reach the nip point (the bottom dead center), they act like scissors to shear the material. During the rest of the rotation, the blades clear the material path, allowing the strip to pass freely.

· Flying Shear Operation: As a type of Flying Shear, the drum speed is synchronized with the line speed (vline). This allows for dynamic cutting (e.g., cropping heads/tails, dividing coils) while the material is in high-speed motion.

Main Application Scenarios

ScenarioDescription
Hot/Cold Rolling ExitCropping head/tail of strip steel, dividing coils, and sampling during operation.
Pickling/Continuous Annealing/Galvanizing LinesDynamic coil changes and cutting before/after welds.
Wire & Rod MillsHigh-speed flying shear for end cropping, multi-length cutting, or emergency breaking (suitable for small sections).
Cut-to-Length Lines (CTL)Rotary shears used for high-precision, non-stop cross-cutting of thin strips (typically 0.1–3mm) combined with Levelers and stackers.

Key Characteristics

· High Efficiency: Enables continuous online shearing without decelerating or stopping the line.

· Compact Structure: Lower impact load compared to guillotine shears.

· ⚠️ Maintenance Critical: Blade gap and overlap must be precisely adjusted according to material thickness and grade; blade wear directly affects cut quality (burr formation).

Technical Note

Do not confuse the Drum Shear (a rotary flying shear for thin/medium sections) with the Roll Shear (used in heavy plate mills). Roll shears use an arc-shaped blade to "roll" through thick plates and are generally not used for high-speed flying applications.
